What to Do so that Your Cat does Not Scratch Furniture?

Cats need to scratch, and they do it for various reasons: One is to take care and file their nails by sharpening them and also removing the old layers. Another reason is to mark territory visually and olfactively, the visual part is evident even for the eyes of humans and the olfactory part is to warn theirs that this territory is theirs. For them it's natural, that's why they never have to be scolded, the thing to do is to reeducate them.

Observe it and get an object that you like

If you do not want the cat to choose freely which object or piece of furniture to scratch, you will have to provide one or several substitutes. They have to be porous surfaces because the nails can be grasped well and their old layer can come off.

To know what types of objects you like the most, before you have to observe it, see what types of textures you like and even see which areas tend to scratch: look if they are vertical or horizontal surfaces, if they are soft or hard, if you do the entrance to the house or next to the sofa ... When you have done the study, buy a similar scraper and place it next to the furniture that you like to scratch. Gradually you can move the scraper to the area you want it to be. Make sure that the scraper is of quality and that it does not spoil.

A trick is to rub the scraper with Cat Herb also known as Nepeta Cataria, Catnip, Cat's Basil among many other names. This plant with menthol scent attracts and intoxicates felines, it is a good way to attract it to your scraper.

If the cat is already an adult and has a certain age, you can take its legs and make the scratching movement, to leave its smell on the new object and to tell it explicitly that this new object can be scratched.

Covers furniture that is already spider

To avoid scratching the areas you have already marked, cover the furniture you have already marked with a different texture (sheets, plastic ...) The cat will take a while to forget its former area, between two weeks and a month.

Cut the nails to the cat

Every two or three weeks you have to cut the nails to the cat, so that they are healthy and so that their scratches are less painful. It is necessary to watch not to cut much, since inside the nail there is a vein that does not have to be cut, otherwise the cat will feel a lot of pain and will bleed.

It will also be necessary to create a space of trust so that you do not associate this hygienic moment with a bad moment. Cherish him, calm him down and do not be more than 10 minutes.

If you want to know how to properly cut your cat's nails you can ask your trusted veterinarian.
