How to get rid of ticks and fleas?

Actualizado: 25 may 2019

With the arrival of spring, there is a greater presence of ticks and fleas, which poses a risk to our pets since these are a source of food for these parasites. Ticks and fleas, apart from causing serious damage to animals, including death in the most extreme cases, can also affect the health of humans.

To prevent our dog from being affected by them, the best we can do is take preventive measures. That is why it is important to check our pet's hair regularly, especially in spring and summer since in these times ticks and fleas are more active. It is also necessary to maintain proper hygiene, combing and bathing them regularly.

Keep in mind that animals can not only be infected outside the home but also in their own homes. For this reason we have to wash the bed of our dog or cat and vacuum the carpets and under the armchairs, beds and other furniture in the house, frequently.

On the other hand, there are products that can help us carry out this task. The most common and used are necklaces, sprays or pipettes, among others. Some of these products are made from plant oils, known for their insect repellent effects: neem oil, tea tree, citronella, geranium or rosemary. These natural substances are a fantastic alternative for people who do not want to use chemical insecticides for their animal.

But sometimes all these preventive measures are not enough and our pets end up getting infected. For that reason, if we find a tick in our dog we must first check that it is not attached to your skin. If so, it is best to visit the veterinarian to proceed appropriately. If, however, the tick is not yet fully hooked, it can be removed. To do this we must be very careful, helping us with tweezers to prevent any part of the parasite from getting stuck to their skin.

In any case, it is always advisable to visit the veterinarian regularly to detect all problems on time and get the best possible health for our friends.
